What to Expect During Your Dental Exam
A dental exam is a relatively quick six step process performed by a dental hygienist. During the exam, your hygienist will clean your teeth and gums and check for any oral issues.
Step 1: Checking Your Teeth and Gums
Before cleaning your teeth, your hygienist will check for oral concerns, such as gingivitis. The hygienist will examine each tooth and your surrounding gums using a small mirror.
Step 2: Scraping Off Plaque and Tartar
Plaque builds up in your mouth every day, but a good brush and floss can remove it. If you fail to brush and floss your teeth, that plaque will harden into tartar, which only a dentist with the proper tools can remove.
Your dental hygienist will use a small mirror and scaler to identify and remove all plaque and tartar on your gum line and in between your teeth. The better you are at brushing and flossing your teeth at home, the less time the hygienist will need to spend scraping during this step.
Step 3: Brushing
With a professional electric brush, your hygienist will brush and polish your teeth to clean off any remaining plaque or tartar.
Step 4: Flossing
A professional floss allows for an even deeper clean, as your hygienist can reach spots in between your teeth that may be difficult to clean at home.
Step 5: Rinsing
Now that your mouth is clear of all plaque and tartar, your hygienist will rinse your mouth with a liquid fluoride mixture to remove any leftover debris.
Step 6: Fluoride Treatment
Lastly, your hygienist may apply a fluoride treatment that helps protect against cavities until your next visit.
X-Rays
During your visit, you may also undergo dental X-rays. How often you should receive dental X-rays varies based on factors like age and oral health status, but the general recommendation is once per year. These X-rays allow the dentist to see the interior of your teeth and gums and identify problems such as cavities.
